The quality of the faculty of Arts & Sciences is the single most critical factor contributing to our rankings and the foundation of our hopes for setting a new standard for teaching and research in a public university. Without investing significantly in faculty, the College and the University cannot achieve the high goals we have set for ourselves. To be effective, the investment must be both qualitative and quantitative, it must cross all faculty ranks and disciplines, it must acknowledge the vital connection between teaching and research, it must consider important questions of diversity, and it must focus on the areas most likely to have the greatest impact. We must not only hire more faculty, but also invest more resources in related administrative support, graduate aid, research assistants, lab technicians, and the physical facilities to house them all. To invest in faculty is to invest in our students, in our colleagues, and in our future as an institution.
