Reward and Recognition Policy

This policy goes into effect Jan. 1, 2007. The Dean of Arts and Sciences reserves the right to terminate or make changes to this policy at any time.

Purpose

This policy is intended to recognize and appreciate outstanding contributions that further the goals and objectives of Arts and Sciences.

Eligibility

Per the University Employee Rewards and Recognition Policy, Section II: Eligibility:

This policy is applicable to salaried full-time and part-time classified, University staff, restricted, “at-will" and wage employees. Wage employees are not eligible for recognition leave.

Awards are for employees of Arts and Sciences organizations who fall into the above stated categories.

Employees who received a rating of Below Contributor at their last performance evaluation are not eligible to receive an Arts and Sciences Reward and Recognition Award.

Members of the Reward and Recognition Committee are eligible for awards during their tenure on the committee. If they are nominated, the committee will not see the nomination. Once the committee has made their selection of award recipients, the Dean’s Office will determine if the nomination submitted for a member of the committee has merit according to the criteria set forth in the policy. If the committee awarded the maximum number of awards allowable per quarter, the Dean’s Office will select the most meritorious recipients according to the criteria set forth in this policy.

Arts & Sciences Reward and Recognition Committee

The Arts and Sciences Reward and Recognition Committee has two main functions:

  • Review and approve all nominations and determine award recipients according to the policy.
  • Initiate and/or review changes to the Arts and Sciences Reward and Recognition Policy, subject to approval by the Dean of Arts and Sciences.

The committee will consist of five classified employees and one representative from the Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences. All efforts will be made to include representatives from each of the following areas in Arts and Sciences:

  • Computing and Central Administration
  • Sciences
  • Social Sciences
  • Humanities/Arts/Languages
  • Institutes and Centers

The committee will be appointed by the Dean’s Office. Nominations of committee members will be solicited from all eligible employees to assist with the appointment of the committee. Nominators must check with nominees before they submit their nomination to ensure that they are willing to serve on the committee. You may nominate yourself for the committee.

In order to serve on the Reward and Recognition Committee, a representative must be:

  • a classified or wage employee of Arts and Sciences;
  • willing to attend and participate in all meetings of the Committee;
  • willing to serve on the committee for a term of three years.

Please note that members of the committee are not eligible to participate in the discussion of a nomination or in the final vote for the award winner when a nominee is a relative.

The role of the representative from the Office of the Dean on the committee is to ensure that University and Arts and Sciences policies are being followed. This member will not vote on the selection of award recipients unless the committee vote is tied.
