As a leader among public institutions, the University of Virginia supports research, scholarship and creativity in many fields. The excellence of Arts & Sciences research and scholarship in the humanities and the physical, social and biomedical sciences is widely recognized among peer institutions. A significant amount of external sponsorship for research, including competitively awarded federal grants, is awarded to Arts & Sciences researchers each year, reaching close to $46 million in a recent year (about one-quarter of the total for the University). Over a dozen special centers and institutes offer students the opportunity to work with faculty on topics of current social and scientific concern or scholarly interest.
