New Home for the Department, Jan 2010
The Department of Religious Studies moved to Gibson Hall, part of the new South Lawn project, in January 2010. The new building features classrooms, seminar rooms, study lounges, computer labs, faculty offices, and meeting and conference rooms.
Jean-Yves Lacoste to be a Visiting Professor in Fall 2010
Jean-Yves Lacoste, author of Experience and the Absolute, La phénoménalité de Dieu, and the editor of Encyclopedia of Christian Theology, will be a visiting professor in the department for the fall semester, 2010, and will give the Richards Lectures in November, 2010. He will also be teaching two courses: one on Origen and another on Kierkegaard.
Visiting Professor Tom Greggs, Jan-Feb 2010
Tom Greggs (Department of Theology and Religious Studies, University of Chester, UK) has joined the department during January and February 2010. Among other activities, he has been meeting with other faculty and graduate students and working on a new book. He also gave a talk entitled "Anthropological Pessimism and Eschatological Optimism" (Universal Salvation from a Strong Doctrine of Sin).
Hiking on the Appalachian Trial in Course on Religious Pilgrimage, Spring 2008

Religious Studies Major to Study in Turkey Fall Semester 2008. August 19, 2008
Congratulations to rising 4th year Jessica Walker. Jessica received the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship awarded by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education. The Anthropology and Religious Studies double major will be studying in Ankara, Turkey for the fall semester.
Buddhist Studies Group to host conference in September 2012
UVa's Buddhist Studies Group, a cohort of more than thirty graduate students and faculty, announces a graduate student conference to be hosted on Grounds September 14-16, 2012. Religious Studies Graduate Research Colloquium, Fall 2009
During the fall of 2009, graduate students in the department initiated a new Religious Studies Graduate Research Colloquium. Over the course of three meetings, papers were presented by Howard Pickett, Blaire French, Brenton Sullivan, Chris Bell, Petra Harvey, and Peter Kang. Daniel Weiss and Chris Hackett served as respondents. The colloquium drew terrific attendance and offered the chance for graduate students to meet and converse with each other across the many sub-disciplines within the department. The colloquium was organized by Peter Kang, with the help of Matt Munson and Ben Deitle.
We are proud to announce that Sarah Jacoby, Ph.D. in Tibetan Buddhist Studies (2006), will begin teaching as Assistant Professor in the Department of Religion at Northwestern University in the Fall of 2009. She is currently finishing her Post-doctoral fellowship in the Society of Fellows in the Humanities at Columbia University. August 20, 2008.
