Ching-Hsuan Lily Hsieh, has been described by both audience members and critics as a lyric coloratura soprano possessing a “dynamic” and “sparkling” voice. Originally from Taiwan, Ms. Hsieh is an emerging oratorio soloist who has performed Handel’s Messiah (Roanoke Symphony), Vivaldi’s Gloria, Carissimi’s Jephte , Fauré’s Requiem, Vaughan William’s Dona Nobis Pacem, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Vesperae solemnes (Jefferson Choral society). An active recitalist, Ms. Hsieh has presented many well-received solo recitals in the United States and Taiwan.Her perfect pitch memory has enabled her to excel in contemporary vocal music: she has worked with renowned soprano Lucy Shelton and composer Bright Sheng in master class and recital situations.

In the opera field, Ms. Hsieh performed the role of Amy in Mark Adamo’s Little Women. She gave her New York opera performance debut in the Da Capo Theater, singing the role of Nanetta in Verdi’s Falstaff. She also performed the role of Sister Constance in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmelites at the National Theater in Taiwan. With Opera Roanoke, she performed the role of Musetta in the Puccini's La Bohème and Dew Fairy in Humperdinck’s English version of Hansel und Gretel.

Dr. Hsieh holds a Master of Vocal Performance degree from Boston Conservatory and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Ohio State University. Before coming to teach at University of Virginia, she had been a full-time voice teacher at Liberty University since 2003.
