Jazz Ensemble with Free Bridge Quintet presents
Green Chemistry

UVA Jazz Ensemble

The University of Virginia's McIntire Department of Music presents the UVA Jazz Ensemble under the direction of John D'earth on Saturday, February 26th, 2011, at 8pm.   This winter concert will be a special event premiering a new composition by D'earth for the Jazz Ensemble and the Free Bridge Quintet, who will appear as the featured guest artists for the entire evening. The Free Bridge Quintet is the faculty jazz quintet at the University. The new piece, entitled Green Chemistry, is made possible by the James Dunton Gift to the McIntire Department of Music's Jazz Performance Program.

Green Chemistry comprises five movements, and will pair the Free Bridge Quintet members with their most accomplished students in a kind of Concerto Grosso for double rhythm section and large jazz ensemble. Green Chemistry is inspired by the international Green Chemistry movement, which encourages chemists to explore and address the environmental problems created by the many blessings of modern chemistry and by the ubiquity of chemicals in our modern world.  The term "green chemistry" can also be taken as a double-entendre because the piece will explore human interaction, as well, especially as regards the "chemistry" between teachers and their students, where the learning goes both ways. The piece is being designed to heighten the collaborative and creative energies between the students in the Jazz Ensemble and their teachers in the Free Bridge Quintet.  The Free Bridge Quintet features Jeff Decker on saxophones, John D'earth on trumpet and flugelhorn, pianist Wells Hanley, acoustic bassist Peter Spaar, and drummer/percussionist Robert Jospe.  Each member of the group will perform individually with the Jazz Ensemble on the first half of the concert.

This concert is both interdisciplinary and interactive in a number of ways: between scientists and artists, between students and their professors, between current students and alumni, between the left brain and right, between the environment and mankind, and between UVa and the Charlottesville community at-large.

Tickets for the concert on Saturday, February 26th are $10 for Adults $5 for Students and free for UVa students who reserve their seats in advance. Tickets can be purchased on line at www.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu or by calling the Arts Box Office at 434.924.3376. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door.
