Every year, undergraduate students from UVA participate in the prestigious William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition where they test their Math skills and compete for prizes with thousands of students from other US and Canada universities.
The next competition will take place on December 5th 2009 and will consist of two sets of problems administered in a morning and an afternoon session. The problems are very challenging, no wonder that median score for this competition is usually zero, but the rewards are worth the effort: in addition to the generous prizes, the winners and successful participants also gain recognition that can become a stepping stone in their future careers.
We are starting the preparation and training sessions for the Putnam Competition this fall. Any interested UVA undergraduate student can apply. If you are interested in Putnam, you should also take part in the Virginia Tech Regional Math Contest (VTRMC) which will take place on October 24th 2009.
To join you should contact our Putnam advisory team by October 10th in order to get registered. The core team members will be decided based on the results of the Putnam selection exam which will take palce on October 5th, however, even if you are not selected as a core team member you can still participate as an alternate.
