The Presidential Management Fellows Program
The Presidential Management Fellows Program is a 2-year leadership training program of the U.S. federal government designed to attract outstanding graduating graduate students (masters and doctoral level) of ALL ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES to leadership and management of public policies and programs across the spectrum of federal agencies. It is a great way to advance quickly to a high-ranking permanent position in federal service. U.Va. alums currently participating in this program present information to current U.Va. graduate students concerning the application, nomination, selection, and interview processes. "The Impostor Syndrome: How to Feel As Bright and Capable As Everyone Seems to Think You Are," Dr. Valerie Young, March 11, 2009
In this workshop, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers learn to explore their own internal rule book to see for themselves how it may be setting them up to fall short. Participants are guided through a 7-step process designed to give them additional insight into their own self-limiting philosophies and patterns. Participants gain a plan for change and practical strategies for interrupting the Impostor Syndrome that they can start using immediately. By applying the simple but powerful techniques, Valerie Young assures that participants will acquire the tools needed to eliminate psychological barriers to success.

"Improving Mentoring Relationships and Lab Dynamics," Sharon Milgram, Ph.D., Director, Office of Intramural Training and Education, National Institutes of Health, March 30, 2009
One size does not fit all when it comes to maximizing productivity and teamwork in labs. How individual students, fellows, and mentors approach work and how they communicate their wants and needs can dramatically impact the nature of lab relationships and the overall "feel" of the lab. This workshop will focus on major themes that impact the quality of lab relationships, including a discussion of work styles, supervisory styles, difficult conversations, and ways to set and discuss expectations for mentors and students.
