Additional Materials

Additional materials are not commonly requested for job markets beyond academe.  This depends largely on the industry and job function (e.g. artists will almost certainly be asked to submit portfolios), but some materials you may want to be prepared to supply are listed below.

Academic Transcripts

Employers occasionally request academic transcripts.  Official transcripts are sent directly from an institution’s registrar and usually take several days to process.  The registrar may require a letter of request in hard copy from you, so allow plenty of time to make these requests and have them processed.  Sometimes applicants are also asked to submit official transcripts of their undergraduate and master's programs.  To request transcripts from U.Va., please visit the Office of the University Registrar.

Writing Sample

Some employers ask applicants to submit a writing sample if writing is a significant component of the job.  Do not automatically send a 30-page chapter of your dissertation—be careful to submit a sample that is appropriate to the job.  Alternatively, you may be asked to write a short essay on a topic of the employer’s choice.
