Tutoring Service FAQ

How can I hire a private tutor?

The French Department does not carry a staff of tutors for hire, however, it often maintains a list of students who are available for hire as tutors. The French Department cannot confirm the skill level of tutors who sign-up on the list. Fees for tutoring are to be negotiated between the hiring party and the tutor themselves. There are two ways in which you can find a private tutor with the assistance of the French Department:

  • Send an e-mail to Sage Grubbs at and request that a copy of our list of tutors be sent to you as either an e-mail attachment, or as a hard copy by postal mail.
  • Send an e-mail to Sage Grubbs at cmb7y @virginia.edu outlining the type of tutoring you seek, how many hours per week, your contact information, and any other specifics. She can then forward your message to our e-mail listserves which include all of our graduate students and French majors and minors.

I am a UVa student in a French class who would like to use the Department's free tutoring service. Where can I find information?

The French Department staffs a tutoring service with regular hours of operation through the last week of classes during the spring and fall semesters.
Students should sign up for tutoring on the sign-up sheet posted outside the French Department's office (between the doors of 302 and 304 in New
Cabell Hall). Tutors have different offices, so look for your tutor's office number on the sign-up sheet. Please visit the following link for more information and the tutoring service guidelines: tutoring service guidelines

How can I be added to the French Department's list of available tutors?

Send an e-mail stating your wish to be added to the list to Sage Grubbs at . Please include your name, contact information (e-mail address and phone number) and the year you plan to graduate.
