Research Interests

I am now conducting a comparative study of statebuilding and citizenship in the late French empire, roughly from the 1890s to the 1950s. I will use comparisons among the Levant, North Africa, West Africa, and Indochina to problematize conceptual boundaries that have divided the histories of metropole and colony, of the East and the West, and of colonial and postcolonial eras.
