Research Interests

My scholarship spans the fields of French cultural history and film studies. Questions of French national identity, including debates about who should and should not be considered *French*, are at the heart of my intellectual project. Equally important to my work are questions about truth, reality, and representation in cinema. My book, Framing the Nation: Documentary Film in Interwar France, examines the emergence of documentary film in France and its contribution to the portrayal of regional and colonial cultures within the French nation. My articles and book chapters, all related to these broader questions, have explored topics such as contemporary French and Francophone cinema, colonial history, colonial tourism, and colonial memory.
