Adding and Dropping French Courses

IMPORTANT: Any student who is enrolled in courses FRENCH 1010 through 2320 (i.e. who is either on the class roster or on the wait list) but who does not attend the first two class meetings of the semester will be considered as having dropped the class. Please contact your instructor as soon as possible if you have a serious conflict that will prevent you from attending these first two classes.

ADD/DROP ESSENTIALS

  • SIS: Students in the College of Arts and Sciences may add themselves into any class in the SIS (Student Information System) until the enrollment limit for that class is reached. Once the enrollment limit is reached, they may sign up on the wait list for that class in the SIS. (See additional info about waitlists below.)  UVa students outside the College of Arts and Sciences will need the instructor’s or the Language Program Director’s signature on a Course Action Form to enroll in French 1010-2320, even if these classes are not full in the SIS. If you have any questions about this, please contact Karen James ().
  • CONSIDER ALL THE SCHEDULE OPTIONS: We usually have enough room for all students who wish to take French courses, but not necessarily at each student’s first-choice time.  For obvious pedagogical reasons, we will not overload classes, but there are usually one or two sections with spaces available at each level.  Students on a course waitlist are urged to consider rearranging their schedules, if at all possible, to enroll in one of these open sections. If you are already registered in a section that is full, but can move to one with fewer students, we urge you to do so; it is to your benefit to be in a smaller class!
  • GO TO THE CLASS YOU WANT TO TAKE: Many students are still making changes in their schedules and moving between classes and sections during the first week of the semester, so a student at or near the top of a wait list is often (but not always) able to have a space in that class.  Please remember that any student who misses the first two class meetings of the semester is considered to have dropped the class.
  • AVOID GETTING “STUCK” ON THE WAITLIST:  As spaces become available, the SIS moves students off the waitlist and into a class in the order that they signed up on the waitlist.  Some students find themselves “stuck” on the waitlist, however, and bypassed by the SIS.  This occurs for two reasons: 1) the student has not indicated a course to “swap” for the French course in SIS, so being added to the French class roster would mean the student would be registered for too many credit hours, which the SIS will not allow; 2) the student has an administrative or academic hold on his/her account. Please consult your faculty advisor or association dean with any questions about these issues.
  • PLACEMENT:  If you have studied French before and this is your first class at UVa, please pay close attention to the information on Placement and Course Offerings available on our website, distributed in orientation, and explained in class by your instructor. You may also visit the Information for Students in 1010-2320 page to learn more about these courses. Good placement is essential to your success in French, so please do not hesitate to consult your instructor and/or the Language Program Director, Karen James (), with any questions.
