- Kenneth G. Elzinga Fund for Excellence in Economics
This new initiative will celebrate Mr. Elzinga's extraordinary career in teaching, research, and antitrust policy over the past 40 years at UVA. During this time, he has taught over 40,000 students in Econ 201, and he has coached many cohorts of "veterans" in his advanced Antitrust class (Econ 420), many of whom have gone on to exciting careers in law, business, and public service.
Although exact details depend on donor preferences and department needs, what we envision is one or more endowed chairs in Ken's honor, with special emphasis on Law and Economics and Finance, in recognition of career choices made by many of our majors.
Because many of our graduate students are first exposed to effective teaching techniques as TAs in Econ 201, an "Elzinga Teaching Fellow" component will permit the Department to compete with top-10 universities for the very best talent for the graduate program.
Nobel Speakers Fund will enable us to bring in a series of the world's best economists for an innovative course that focuses on transformative ideas in the field. The overall goal of this initiative is to create a world-class, premier learning opportunity for economics students at Virginia, regardless of major.
The undergraduate experience at a leading research university can be enriched by independent research. The Marshall Jevons fund sponsors innovative research by economics students. We hope that this program will be expanded and that a comparable program for graduate students or for teams of graduate and undergraduate students can be established.
