Scholarships for Echols Scholars

The Echols Scholars Program appreciates the kind generosity of individuals who have helped to create four endowed scholarships for the Echols Program.  Three of these scholarships are currently available and are managed by the University of Virginia Center for Undergraduate Excellence.

Notifications regarding these scholarships will be sent out annually and Echols Scholars are free to inquire at either the Echols Office or the Center for Undergraduate Excellence for additional information.

Operational Endowed Scholarships

The Sheri Gayle Richman Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a fourth-year Echols Scholar in the humanities or social sciences (not the natural or physical sciences) and intending to enter a program of graduate or professional study the semester after graduation.  The Scholarship is for approximately $5,000, is awarded in the spring and deadlines will be posted in the spring semester.  The Scholarship was established for Echols Scholars by the family and friends of Sheri Gayle Richman, an Echols Scholar who died in an automobile accident on June 7, 1988.

The Laurie Lee Woolen Memorial Scholarship is awarded to two rising second year Echols Scholars.   It is awarded in the late spring semester and deadlines will be posted by the Center for Undergraduate Excellence.  The Scholarship, each of approximately $2500, was established for Echols Scholars by the friends and family of Laurie Lee Woolen, who died in an automobile accident in 1980, after completing her second year at the University.

The Kenneth N. and Barbara B. Adatto Scholarship is awarded annually to an Echols Scholar of any year or major from the state of Louisiana.   Interested Scholars should contact the Center for Undergraduate Excellence by February 1.  The criteria include the quality, inventiveness, and integrity of the student's academic program and intellectual life, as well as his or her contribution to the academic community of the University.

Research Scholarships

The Echols Program maintains the Echols Scholarship Fund to provide modest support (always less than $1000) to an enrolled Echols Scholar who is doing a research project that requires personal expenditures, such as travel or research costs.  Interested Scholars will need to submit a proposal to the Echols Office and discuss the project with the Dean and Director.  Due to budget constraints the Program cannot support more than a handful of these annually, but we hope to expand our potential.  Echols Scholars should also investigate various Scholarships offered by the University and College of Arts and Sciences on the website of the Center for Undergraduate Excellence

Regrettably, the Echols Scholars Program cannot offer scholarships or financial assistance to incoming Echols Scholars.
