Creating/Editing Images for Web Publishing

Creating thumbnail

  • Open image using Fireworks program.
  • Crop image so that it is basically square.
  • Modify: Image Size
    • Enter width of 72. Make sure that “Constrain proportions” box is checked (height will automatically reset as close to 72 as possible). Confirm resolution is 72 pixels/in. Click OK
  • Modify: Canvas Size
    • Enter width of 82 and anchor the image in the left middle of the canvas. Click OK
  • Modify: Canvas color
    • Choose white, click OK.
  • Go to File> Export Preview
    • The file can be saved as either a .jpg or .gif file type.
  • Using the dropdown menu from the Saved Settings choose either JPG-Better Quality or GIF WebSnap 128, depending on which offers the best quality and smallest file size.
  • Click Export.
  • Save using the naming convention.

Creating larger image

Open original image using Fireworks. Crop image so that it is basically rectangular, in a 2:3 ratio (taller than wide). Modify: Image Size: Enter width of 200, height will automatically change to as close to 300 as possible (make sure that “Constrain Proportions” box is checked). Confirm resolution is 72 pixels/in. File: Export Preview. Chose the Saved Setting that offers the best quality picture combined with the fastest loading time. Click Export. Save image using LastNameFirstName naming convention.

Creating Cover page image

Open original image in Fireworks. Crop so that it is rectangular in a 3:2 ratio (wider than tall) Modify: Image Size: Enter width of 200, height will automatically change to as close to 300 as possible (make sure that “Constrain Proportions” box is checked). Confirm resolution is 72 pixels/in. File: Export Preview. Chose the Saved Setting that offers the best quality picture combined with the fastest loading time. Click Export. Save image using LastNameFirstNameCover. naming convention.

Uploading Files/Creating Image Component in Ingeniux

Open Ingeniux. Open News Publications: Internal Components: Image. Choose File: Upload. Use the pop-up window to navigate to the image you want to upload. Check the “Create Component” box and choos Images/asonline in the “Upload to” field. Click Upload. Name image using Last Name, First Name convention, keeping TN or Cover as needed.

Naming Images

This naming convention is for all A&S and ICMS images.

All image file names

Maximum 31 characters. If it is longer, shorten as needed while retaining the date and last name portions.

No spaces or symbols (Just numbers and letters)

Include TN at the end for Thumbnail images

Images of People

LastnameFirstnameYYMM
LastnameFirstnameYYMMTN (for thumbnails)
LastnameFirstnameYYMM01, LastnameFirstnameYYMM02 (if many images in same month)

Example: If multiple images of Ed Ayers are added March, 2006 save them as

  • AyersEd060301
  • AyersEd060302
  • AyersEd060301TN
  • AyersEd060302TN

If more than one person in the image, include both names from left to right names in order as they appear:

Example: An Image of Nancy Ryan and Ed Ayers would be saved as

Images of buildings, objects, non-people

Example:

The image would be saved as description of image followed by the date the image was created (if date created is unknown, use the date it was last modified)

An image name for the cover or image an of a page of Arts & Sciences Magazine would contain the publication name, date, page number:
