For placement information, refer to the Foreign Language Placement Index.

All students who have a previous background in Spanish but who have NOT taken the SAT II Subject Test and are not exempted by the Advanced Placement test MUST take the Spanish Placement test. The Spanish Placement test is given during Summer Orientation, as well as at other times during the school year. If you require further placement information, contact the Departmental Foreign Language Coordinator, Emily Scida, (434) 924-4646.

There are several course sequences you may follow depending on your Spanish SAT II/AP Test/Language Placement test scores:

  • SPAN 101 to SPAN 102 to SPAN 201 to SPAN 202
  • SPAN 106 to SPAN 201 to SPAN 202
  • SPAN 201 to SPAN 202
  • SPAN 202

Once you begin the required course sequence, you MUST complete each successive course in the sequence with a passing grade. You may not, for example, go from SPAN 101 to SPAN 201. Please note that the foreign language requirement must be completed at U.Va. Fall offerings include SPAN 101, 201, 202, and Spring offerings include SPAN 102, 106, 202.

Several courses are available for first-year students who have completed their language requirement. SPAN 309, 310, 311, and 312 are designed to further develop student’s language skills. SPAN 202, or the equivalent, is a prerequisite for SPAN 309, 310, and 311. SPAN 311, or the equivalent, is a prerequisite for all undergraduate courses with a number higher than 311. SPAN 330 introduces students to Spanish literature; it is a prerequisite for upper-level Spanish literature courses.

The Casa Bolívar (Spanish House) provides a student-led, Spanish-speaking environment inside U.Va. There are regular communal meals and activities, including sponsorship of films and talks, support for the Departmental tertulia, and the annual play in Spanish. Students earn one credit for participating. For more information, contact the Department.
