All Sociology courses apply toward fulfillment of the College area requirement in Social Sciences.

Introductory sociology courses examine how social relationships shape the beliefs and actions of people. SOC 101 is the best introduction to sociology. This lecture-discussion course provides a broad overview of society and gives students a clear sense of competing perspectives in the field; it is also a prerequisite for declaring a major in sociology. The Department also offers a wide range of 200-level courses designed to introduce students to specific social issues. Appropriate courses for new students that will be offered this fall include Death and Dying  (SOC 220), Criminology (SOC 223), Gender and Society (SOC 232), American Society and Popular Culture (SOC 247), Sociology of the Family (SOC 252), and Law and Society (SOC 255).

In addition, the Department offers (without prerequisites) a wide range of 300-level courses, most with small enrollments, which are open to non-majors. Such courses generally presume that students understand basic sociological concepts. All courses are described in more detail in the Undergraduate Record and the Sociology Handbook (available in the Department).
