Since Germany has become unified and Europe economically integrated, German has become increasingly important as an international language. The German Department offers German language courses at all levels as well as courses in German literature and culture. Our classes aim to make students linguistically proficient and culturally aware.
If you elect to take any of the lower-division German language courses (GERM 101, 102, 201, 202), you may not take another German language course at the same time. You may simultaneously enroll in a German course taught in English; these courses are indicated by the prefix GETR. If you have fulfilled your language requirement with German, you may select GERM 300. All other GERM courses are open to you only with the permission of the instructor. All GERM courses beyond the 202 level and all GETR courses fulfill the Humanities area requirement. For descriptions of courses numbered 300 and above, contact the German Department or check the Department’s web site.
All students with any previous background in German who have not taken the SAT II Subject Test or the Advanced Placement test must take the German placement test if they plan to take German at any time in their college career. This test is administered during Fall Orientation only. Once you are placed in the required course sequence, you must complete each successive course with a passing grade. You may not skip, for example, from GERM 102 to GERM 202. You may not take more than one course in the sequence at a time. If you need additional information, contact Janette Hudson at (434) 924-6694.
Students beyond the 202 level should first take GERM 300 (Advanced Grammar) and GERM 301 (Introduction to Literature). No course below the 300 level may count toward a major or minor in German.
The Max Kade German House provides the opportunity for students to use German in their daily lives. Located at 581 Brandon Avenue, it houses 12 students who live and eat together with a native speaker. The House also sponsors many German-related events. For more information contact the German Department.
