The English Department offers a variety of introductory seminars, with no more than 22 students in each, in both literature (ENLT) and writing (ENWR). There are no exams in the ENWR courses, but there are weekly assignments and attendance is mandatory. ENLT courses have no prerequisites; all place strong emphasis on the development of discussion and writing skills. All ENLT courses may be used to satisfy the Second Writing Requirement.

The English Department also offers a number of 300-level courses that may be of interest to some first-year students who have met their first writing requirement. These courses tend to be larger than our introductory seminars; some are primarily lecture courses. They are geared towards the needs of declared English majors, though any interested student in the College may enroll.

Students who wish to major in English must achieve a grade of C or better in an ENLT course before declaring their major. Prospective English majors should complete such a course no later than their fourth semester at U.Va. Any ENLT course taken at U Va. will satisfy the pre-requisite to the English major. AP credit does not satisfy the prerequisite to the English major. Not all ENLT seminars are offered every semester or every year; for precise information on which courses will be offered this fall, please consult the fall COD. Detailed course descriptions can be found on the Department web page in the section on undergraduate studies.
