For over a decade UVA has had an undergraduate exchange program with the Friedrich Schiller University, Jena. The exchange program enables students at UVA to study for a semester or a year at the Friedrich Schiller University, and to transfer up to 12 credits taken there toward the German Major and up to 9 credits toward the German Minor. Students may transfer additional credits in German and other departments for college credit toward other degree programs (e.g. History, Sociology, Political Science, etc.). Click here to read more.
Students need to have completed four semesters of German (i.e. through 202) to be eligible. Beginning students of German seeking to prepare for studying at Jena may take an intensive second year German course in the fall semester -- German 205 (nicknamed "Jena Express"). German 205 covers the material of German 201 and 202 in one semester, so that students may study in Jena in the following spring semester.
We currently have five undergraduates ranging from first to fourth year students in Jena: Jillian Stafflinger (CLAS), Siggi Hindrichs (CLAS), Dan Hojnowski (CLAS), Rachel Nelson (SEAS), and Kristina Rowe (CLAS). For the 2007-08 academic year, we had $15,000 in scholarship funds through the Center of German Studies, supporting study in Jena. This included a $5,000 grant from UVA alumnus Alexis Ohanian and an additional $10,000 grant from an anonymous alumna. In accordance with the stipulations established by the donors, one student received the $5,000 Ohanian grant; four students received $2,500 from the $10,000 grant. Additionally, the University of Jena made a one-time offer of a 1,000 Euro travel stipend, which all five students received. The Center for German Studies will be able to provide the same funding opportunities in the 2008/09 academic year.
