Research Interests

Chinese linguistics, Chinese literature and culture, Chinese language pedagogy and teachers training of Chinese as a foreign language

Professor Liang has an M.A. in Chinese literature from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, an M.A. in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Michigan. Her academic interests include Chinese syntax and semantics, applied linguistics, and Chinese language pedagogy. In 2003-2004 she was a recipient of the Excellence in Diversity Fellowship and in 2004-2005 was awarded a University Teaching Fellowship. She has taught Chinese language at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, the University of Michigan, Middlebury College Chinese summer school, Cornell University before she came to the University of Virginia in 2002. She has been the Coordinator for teacher training and supervision in the program of the Associated Colleges in China (ACC) (1998-2004) in Beijing, and conducted numerous CFL teachers training workshops in both Taiwan and China. She is a member of the Board of Directors for the Chinese Language Teachers Association. (2004-2007). She is the co-editor of Reflecting on the Future of Chinese Language Pedagogy (2005) and has published several articles on the issues of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
