For over one hundred years, the Arts and Sciences Council (ASC) has represented the needs of students in the College of Arts and Sciences (CLAS). ASC is the third name of the organization historically known as "The College Council." Throughout that time, the students of The College (now the College of Arts and Sciences) elected officers to serve their needs: President of the College, Vice President of the College, Secretary of the College, and Historian of the College. For most of the century, the President and Vice President held dual roles. They led The College Council and served as representatives to the Honor Committee, with the President of the College traditionally serving as Chairperson of that Committee.
As the University grew, the administration of the Honor Committee required more work, and the officers had less time to spend on The College Council. In the spring of 1993, the CLAS student body ratified a constitution that renamed The College Council as the "College Advisory Board" (CAB) and retained the President, Vice President, & Secretary of the College as its leaders (and created the position of Treasurer of the College).
On February 9, 2000, the CAB representatives renamed the organization as the "Arts and Sciences Council." This second name change clarified the purpose and representation of ASC: To provide an undergraduate Arts and Sciences government to represent the interests, ambitions, and academic needs of CLAS students.
