Apply to become a Miller Arts Scholar

Any rising second-year or third-year student actively engaged in the College of Arts and Sciences is eligible to apply for J. Sanford Miller Family Arts Scholars. Application forms and materials must be submitted to by February 24 and accepted applicants will be notified in mid May. A maximum of fourteen Arts Scholars will be elected each year. These will generally break down into four in studio art, music, drama and two in dance.


  • Must be actively engaged in the College of Arts and Sciences, either through majoring or minoring in the college or through ongoing and measurable coursework within an artistic discipline in the college.

  • Include current resume.

  • Include UVA transcript (unofficial transcript is fine)

  • Include examples with descriptions (date, location, title, medium, objective) of your work. Visual artists may submit a small portfolio containing up to five high-resolution jpg images labeled with title, dimension, materials, date, etc.  Performing artists may send a video or audio recording up to ten minutes in length.  All digital files submitted via email should have file names formatted as “Last Name_First Name_image1.jpg” or “Last Name_First Name_musicexample1.mp3” Do not send full length videos or audio recordings.
  • Applicants should have completed or be currently enrolled in at least one course in the discipline for which they are applying as an Arts Scholar. Recommended average GPA of 3.400 or higher in all completed arts courses.

  • Applicants should also list any additional UVA arts related courses taken, performances participated in, or other experiences in the arts at the university.

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.200 in all university courses.

  • Complete a personal statement outlining interest in becoming an Arts Scholar and how this relates to larger goals. Include a description of how your participation will contribute to the Miller Arts Scholars Program.
